Wed. Feb. 14: Ash Wednesday Services Signify the Start of Lent. Join us for a special service with the imposition of ashes, a sign of repentance and turning our hearts toward God, next Wednesday Feb. 14th, 3 pm at St. James or 7:00- pm at St. John’s. We offer two services so those who don’t like to drive at night may participate fully in the start of this Holy season.
What is Lent? The word Lent comes from the Old English ‘lencten’, meaning spring, and refers to our 40 day Holy season before Easter. That being said, in Canada we may not feel spring is around the corner when Lent begins. However, the forty days is significant as Jesus himself fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before beginning his earthly ministry. Since the 7th century after Christ’s resurrection, we’ve set apart the 40 days before Easter as days of special penitential prayer & fasting.
Note, the Sundays in that time frame are not counted as days to fast. Lent now is observed as a time of abstinence from festivities, by almsgiving and by devoting time to more prayer and bible study.
